Frequently Asked Questions

What does a remote graphic designer produce for a firm like ours?

The material a practice needs constantly and never plans for. Proposal and qualifications layouts, which for an AEC firm is often the highest-value design work there is. Project sheets and boards. Presentation templates that survive being used by other people. Award submissions. Social graphics, advertising creative in static and motion, and email templates. Signage, site hoarding and event material. Brand assets and the small system that keeps them consistent. Report and document layout, including annual or capability documents. What makes a dedicated designer different from a per-project one is that templates get built and reused rather than every piece starting from nothing. That compounding is the actual saving, and it does not appear until the second or third month. Judging a design engagement on its first project misses the entire point.

Ask AI

Can a designer work inside our brand guidelines, or build them if we have none?

Both, and most firms need a bit of each. Working inside existing guidelines is straightforward: the designer picks up the typefaces, palette, grid, logo rules and templates, and produces material that matches. The more common situation is a firm with a logo, a rough color preference, and twelve documents that all look slightly different. In that case the first project doubles as the beginning of a system. The guidelines get written from decisions actually made, rather than in the abstract. That is faster and it produces rules people actually follow. A full rebrand is a different engagement and usually not what a firm needs. Send three pieces you like and three you do not. The direction becomes obvious faster that way than any branding workshop would make it, and it costs nothing.

Ask AI

What files do we get, and who owns the design work?

Working files as well as final formats, and the work belongs to your firm. That means the editable source, in Figma, InDesign, Illustrator or whatever the piece was built in, along with the exports. Fonts are a separate matter. Typeface licenses belong to whoever bought them and are not ours to transfer, so commercial fonts are purchased in your name. Stock photography and illustration carry the license they came with, so ask what each one permits before a piece is published rather than after. Copyright in commissioned work is worth settling in writing. The U.S. Copyright Office explains how ownership actually works, and it is often not what people assume. Everything stays in your environment throughout the engagement, so nothing has to be requested back at the end of it.

Ask AI

How do design revisions work without spiraling?

By reviewing in the right order and consolidating the feedback. Order first: approve the concept and layout before anything is refined, then the content and hierarchy, then the polish. A firm that questions the layout after the final artwork has paid for the intermediate stages twice. Consolidation second: one person collects all comments and sends them once, rather than three people sending contradictory notes over two days. Number of rounds is agreed at the start, and two is a normal structure when the reviews happen in that order. Because the designer works your hours, an early review can be a fifteen minute screen share instead of a document exchange. That resolves more in less time, and it catches the misunderstandings that a written comment would have hidden until the next round.

Ask AI

How does a designer work with our project photography and imagery?

As the raw material for almost everything, so its state matters. A designer can retouch, color correct, crop and prepare images for each output. They can also build a library, so the same photograph is not re-prepared five times. What they cannot do is compensate for photography that does not exist, which is the actual constraint in most firms. The practical fix is a shared, organized image library with usage rights recorded per project. An image whose permissions nobody can confirm is an image you cannot publish. Renderings can fill gaps before a project is built, and they come from a different specialist. Getting the image library sorted out is usually the first genuinely useful month of a design engagement. It also pays back on every piece produced after it.
