Full Stack Developer

Somebody who can build both the interface and the system behind it, and ship a working application on their own. They are the right hire when the project is small enough for one person to hold in their head. Also when speed matters more than depth, and when there is no existing team to slot into. For most firms outside the software industry, that describes the situation exactly. An internal tool, a client portal, an integration, or a first version of something. One capable generalist will outrun two specialists coordinating on a project that size. The trade is depth. A full-stack developer is rarely the strongest person in the room on either half. That becomes relevant as a system grows, and not usually before then. Most firms never reach the point where it matters.

When either half of the work becomes genuinely demanding. On the backend that means real data volume, complex business rules, or performance work. It also means security requirements that carry consequences if they are wrong. On the front end it means a sophisticated interface, heavy interaction, or accessibility and performance standards that have to be met rather than approximated. Team size is the other trigger: past two or three developers, specialization stops costing coordination and starts paying for itself. The honest sequence for most firms is to start with one full-stack developer. Add a specialist when a specific part of the system starts limiting you. Adding both at the start is a common and expensive way to buy capacity nobody in the firm is ready to direct. Capacity without direction produces cost rather than software.

A working, useful application, if the scope is honest. What consistently succeeds is a well-defined tool solving one problem. A quoting system. A project tracker built around your actual process. A client portal, an integration between two systems you already pay for, or an internal dashboard. What consistently fails with one developer is anything described as a platform. So does anything needing several distinct interfaces at once, or anything whose requirements are still being discovered while it is built. The reliable method is to ship something small that people use, then extend it. Any estimate given before the requirements are written is a guess. We would rather say so than produce a number you will reasonably hold us to later. Scope the first piece, build it, and estimate the next one from evidence.

By making sure the knowledge exists outside their head from the first week. The measures involved are unglamorous, and all of them work. Your business owns the repository and every account, with a second person on your side holding administrative access. Documentation is written as the work happens, covering how to run it, how to deploy it, and why the awkward decisions were made. The technology choices are mainstream, so somebody else can pick it up. No credentials live only with one person. And ideally another developer reviews the work occasionally, even a few hours a month. None of that is a comment on the individual you hire. It is what makes a one-person system survivable. Ask about it before the hire rather than after, when the answer becomes urgent.

Often yes, and how well depends on the state of what exists. A takeover starts with an assessment. Getting it running, reading the code, and mapping the dependencies. Then checking what is out of date, and identifying what will break first. That takes weeks rather than days on any real system. It is work worth paying for before committing to a longer engagement. Mainstream technology, a clean repository history and any documentation at all make it straightforward. An abandoned framework, no tests, credentials nobody has, and a production server nobody can reach make it a very different conversation. Send us the repository and the access list.
