About the role

The BIM Manager owns how our firm uses BIM: standards, templates, content, coordination and training. You will set up and enforce a BIM execution plan on each project, lead model coordination with consultants and contractors, and help every team get more out of Revit and the tools around it.

What you will do

Write and maintain our BIM standards: templates, naming, view organization, content library and model quality checks.
Prepare a BIM execution plan for each project with the team, consultants and owner, covering model uses, level of development by phase and file exchange.
Lead model coordination: federate models, run clash detection, chair coordination meetings and track issues to closure.
Audit project models for standards, health and performance, and help teams fix what you find.
Plan and deliver Revit and BIM training for new hires and current staff.
Evaluate, budget and roll out software, plugins and hardware with IT and leadership.
Manage the family and detail library so teams reuse content instead of rebuilding it.
Support contract language for BIM deliverables, such as AIA E203 and G202, and owner BIM requirements.
Automate repetitive work with Dynamo or scripts where it saves real time.
Supervise BIM coordinators and modelers, and take part in hiring for the team.

What you bring

Proven experience writing standards and templates that teams actually use.
Hands on coordination experience with Navisworks or a similar tool, and with a cloud platform such as Autodesk Construction Cloud.
Knowledge of the BIMForum LOD Specification and BIM execution planning.
Ability to teach: clear documentation, patient support and practical workshops.
Leadership and influence with project managers and principals.

Nice to have

Dynamo, Python or C# for Revit automation.
Knowledge of ISO 19650 for international clients.
Experience with owner BIM requirements in [government, healthcare or higher education].
Model checking with Solibri or a similar tool.

The task

Send a draft BIM execution plan from a past project, with client details removed and a few gaps you already know about, plus the model element list for one phase. Ask the candidate to mark up the plan (what is missing, what is unclear and what they would change to prevent coordination problems) and outline a short kickoff agenda for the project team.

Your firm's BIM standards, if they are written down.

What to evaluate

Finds the gaps you know about, such as unassigned responsibilities, missing LOD by phase or no clash process.

Written comments a project team would accept.

A BIM manager owns how a firm uses building information modeling. AIA describes a close role, the design technology manager, as the person who coordinates all BIM and digital design logistics. The goal is fewer surprises in coordination and faster production on every team.

What is the difference between a BIM manager, a BIM coordinator and a BIM modeler?

The modeler builds the model on a project (see our BIM Modeler job description). The coordinator runs coordination on one or more projects: federating models, running clash detection and tracking issues. The manager owns the system across the firm: standards, templates, execution plans, software and training, and usually supervises the coordinators and modelers. In a smaller firm one person may cover two of these roles, as long as the standards have an owner.
