  • Location: [City, State] ([on site, hybrid or remote])
  • Employment type: [Full time]

About [Firm name]

[Two or three sentences about your firm: the kind of projects you design, where your team is based and how you work.]

About the role

The Revit Technician keeps our Revit work productive across projects. You will set up models and sheets, build and fix families, keep our templates and standards current, and turn markups into clean documents. Architects and designers count on you so they can spend their time on design instead of on the software.

What you will do

  • Set up new Revit projects from our template: levels, grids, worksets, views, sheets and title blocks.
  • Build and maintain Revit families with the right categories, parameters and visibility settings.
  • Produce and update construction document sheets from the model, including schedules, legends and keynotes.
  • Maintain our Revit template, view templates, object styles and standard details.
  • Carry redlines and model changes through plans, sections, elevations and schedules.
  • Troubleshoot slow models, warnings, broken links and worksharing problems.
  • Publish sheet sets to PDF and DWG for issues and consultants.
  • Answer teammates' Revit questions and write down how common tasks are done at our firm.
  • Manage consultant links and keep shared coordinates correct.

What you bring

  • [3] or more years of daily Revit use on building projects.
  • Strong family editing: reference planes, parameters, formulas and nested families.
  • Solid control of view templates, visibility and graphics, filters and phasing.
  • Experience with worksharing, including cloud workshared projects.
  • Knowledge of how US construction document sets are organized.
  • Patience and clarity when helping colleagues solve software problems.
  • [Associate or bachelor's degree in architecture, drafting or a related field, or equivalent experience.]

Nice to have

  • Autodesk Certified Professional in Revit for Architectural Design.
  • Dynamo or pyRevit scripting.
  • Experience building a firm template from scratch.
  • AutoCAD, for older drawings and consultant files.

Software

Revit, AutoCAD, Dynamo, Autodesk Docs, Bluebeam Revu, Navisworks (basic)

Pay and benefits

[Pay range, for example $XX,000 to $XX,000 per year.] [Benefits: health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off, continuing education.]

How to apply

Send your resume, two or three sheets you produced, and a screenshot or short description of a family or template you built, to [email or application link].

[Firm name] is an equal opportunity employer.

US pay data

What a Revit Technician earns in the US

Annual wages for Architectural and Civil Drafters, United States, May 2025. Source: BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics.

BLS has no separate category for Revit technicians; the closest official one is Architectural and Civil Drafters.

Annual wages by percentile for Architectural and Civil Drafters, May 2025
PercentileAnnual wage
10th percentile$46,260
25th percentile$55,650
Median$66,150
75th percentile$80,870
90th percentile$99,710
Average (mean)$70,740

BLS counts 103,700 jobs in this category nationwide, and half of them pay between $55,650 and $80,870. Use the percentiles to set the range you post, nearer the 25th for a junior hire and nearer the 75th for someone who will lead, keeping in mind the note above on how closely this category matches the role. Interview

Revit Technician interview questions

Ten questions in three groups. Under each one, what a strong answer covers, so anyone on your team can run the interview and compare candidates on the same terms.

Technical

  1. How do you set up phasing for a renovation project with existing, demolition and new work?

What a strong answer covers: Explains phases versus phase filters, how graphic overrides show each state, and how views are assigned so each sheet shows the right phase.

  2. Walk me through a parametric window family you built.

What a strong answer covers: Describes reference planes locked to parameters, type versus instance parameters, nested or shared components where they help, and flexing the family before it is loaded.

  3. A project model has become slow to open and sync. How do you diagnose it?

What a strong answer covers: Checks warnings, imported CAD, large families, unused views and groups, links and worksets, and fixes the causes instead of simply compacting the file.

  4. How do view templates and filters help you keep a set consistent?

What a strong answer covers: Uses view templates to control scale, detail level and visibility across sheets, and filters for rules such as fire ratings or phases, so nothing depends on manual overrides.

Workflow and coordination

  1. You improve our template. How do you roll the change out to live projects?

What a strong answer covers: Tests it on a copy, documents what changed, transfers only the needed standards into live projects, and tells each team before touching their model.

  2. How do you prepare a sheet set for a permit issue?

What a strong answer covers: Checks the sheet list, revisions, references and titles, sets up a repeatable print set, and reviews the PDF before it goes out.

  3. Two projects need you on the same afternoon. How do you decide?

What a strong answer covers: Asks the project leads or their manager to set the priority based on deadlines, and gives both teams an honest timeline.

Working with the team

  1. How do you help a colleague who keeps making the same Revit mistake?

What a strong answer covers: Shows the fix side by side instead of just fixing it, writes it down for the team, and checks back later without making it personal.

  2. Tell me about a standard you created that people actually adopted.

What a strong answer covers: Gives a concrete example and explains how they got buy in, by making the standard easier than the old way rather than by enforcing it.

  3. How do you document the fixes and procedures you figure out?

What a strong answer covers: Keeps a short, searchable how to guide with screenshots and updates it whenever something changes.

Skills test

Revit Technician skills test

Model and sheet setup. A practical exercise to send after the first interview. Time limit: 3 hours.

The task

Send your template and a PDF of a simple two story plan. Ask the candidate to set up the project (levels, grids and worksets), model the building shell, create a parametric window family with width and height parameters, and set up three sheets: two floor plans and one elevation, with view templates applied. Keep it inside your standards so you see how they work in them.

What to send the candidate

  • Your Revit template.
  • A dimensioned PDF of the two floor plans and one elevation.
  • Your view and sheet naming standard.

What to evaluate

  • A clean project setup: levels, grids and worksets named to your standard.
  • A window family that flexes correctly with its parameters.
  • View templates doing the work instead of manual overrides.
  • Sheets with correct titles, scales and references.
  • A model with few warnings and no imported shortcuts.

Tell the candidate how you will score it and hold to the time limit. The goal is to see how they work, not to get free production.

Questions, answered

What should a Revit Technician job description include?

A good Revit Technician job description says what the person will own day to day, which software and standards they must already know, the experience you need and how they will work with your team. This kit covers all four, ready to edit, plus interview questions and a practical skills test to check them. For how the role works on real projects, see our page on remote Revit professionals.

Ask AI

What is the difference between a Revit technician and a BIM modeler?

The two overlap, and the titles are often used loosely. As a rule of thumb, a BIM modeler is measured by the model and sheets they build for a project, while a Revit technician is measured by how well the tools work: templates, families, standards and troubleshooting across projects. If you need production capacity, post for a modeler; if every project fights the same software problems, post for a technician.

Ask AI

How much does a Revit technician earn in the US?

BLS has no separate category for Revit technicians. The closest official one, Architectural and Civil Drafters, had a national median wage of $66,150 a year in May 2025, with half of workers between $55,650 and $80,870 and the top tenth above $99,710. Place a technician who maintains the template and trains others toward the upper half of that range.

Ask AI

Which Revit skills should I test in an interview?

Test what makes or breaks a project: family editing with parameters and reference planes, view templates and visibility settings, worksharing, and sheet setup. Ask the candidate to explain a slow or corrupted model they fixed and what caused it. Then give a short practical test in your own template, because how someone works inside your standards tells you more than a list of features they know.

Ask AI

Is a Revit certification worth asking for?

It is a useful signal, not a filter. Autodesk offers a Certified Professional exam in Revit for Architectural Design that covers modeling, documentation, families, collaboration and project setup, taken under proctored conditions. A candidate without it can still be excellent, so list it as a plus and let your practical test decide. Our Revit shortcuts sheet is a quick way to check everyday fluency too.
