About the role

The CAD Drafter turns our architects' and engineers' sketches and markups into accurate AutoCAD drawings. You will draft plans, elevations, sections and details to our CAD standard, pick up redlines quickly, and keep every drawing set consistent from sheet to sheet.

What you will do

Draft floor plans, elevations, sections and details in AutoCAD from sketches, markups and field measurements.
Pick up redlines from architects and engineers accurately and by the agreed deadline.
Add construction details from our detail library and adapt them to each project.
Keep layers, text styles, dimension styles and blocks consistent with our CAD standard.
Set up sheets with title blocks, sheet numbers, scales and references to other sheets.
Convert PDFs, scans and hand sketches into clean, scaled CAD drawings.
Coordinate backgrounds with consultants and keep external references current.
Check drawings for dimension errors, broken references and conflicts between sheets before they go out.
Organize and archive drawing files so anyone on the team can find the current version.

What you bring

Ability to read architectural and engineering drawings and follow US conventions: imperial units, scales and symbols.

Experience working to a CAD standard for layers and sheet organization, such as the US National CAD Standard or a firm standard.
Clear written English for questions about markups.

Revit basics, for projects moving to BIM.
The Architectural Certified Drafter credential from the American Design Drafting Association.

Redline pickup and one detail. A practical exercise to send after the first interview. Time limit: 2 hours.

The task

Send a DWG floor plan and a PDF of hand redlines with about a dozen changes: moved doors, a new wall, dimension fixes and new notes. Ask the candidate to pick up every redline, then draft one wall section detail from a hand sketch. Count the redlines before you send the test so scoring is objective.

What is the difference between a CAD drafter and a BIM modeler?

A CAD drafter produces 2D drawings, line by line, usually in AutoCAD. A BIM modeler builds a 3D model in Revit, and the plans, sections and schedules come out of that model, so a change in one place updates every view. Firms still working in AutoCAD, or converting older drawings, need drafters; firms on Revit need modelers. Plenty of people can do both, so test for the one you need.

Does a CAD drafter need a degree or a certification?

According to BLS, drafters typically need some education after high school, most often an associate's degree from a community college or technical school. Certification is not required, but the American Design Drafting Association offers an Architectural Certified Drafter credential if you want a formal signal. In practice, a short drafting test tells you more about a candidate than either one.

Give a short redline test that looks like real work: a DWG floor plan, a PDF of hand markups and a sketch of one wall section to draft. Two hours is enough. Count the redlines picked up correctly, check layers and dimension styles against your standard, and read the questions the candidate wrote down. Someone who asks about an unclear markup is worth more than someone who guesses.
